The annual ‘Good Divorce Week’, promoted by Resolution, aims to highlight the current crisis in the family courts and to raise awareness of the alternative ways that families can resolve their issues away from Court, and how Resolution members can guide families through the process.

Both of our family solicitors at Onions & Davies are proud to be members of Resolution, and are committed to a constructive approach to dealing with Family Law issues.

Family Court Crisis

Due to the impact of Covid-19, and budgetary constraints, the family courts are currently overstretched, which has lead to backlogs, both in terms of listing cases for hearing and general administrative tasks. Court staff are doing their very best to move cases along as quickly as possible, but, unfortunately, it is often the case that families are frequently left waiting long periods of time to resolve issues concerning finances and child arrangements.

As members of Resolution, we believe that if the government was prepared to fund early legal advice, more cases could be resolved without going to court (where it is safe and appropriate to do so). This would reduce the backlog on the Court system and ensure that those cases that require the Court’s intervention can be dealt with in a timely manner.

At Onions & Davies, we have written to our local MP, Helen Morgan, to raise awareness of the issues currently facing families going through the Family Courts, and we hope that she will lobby the government to make improvements that will reduce the current Family Court backlog.
